Tanzania has many world-famous historical sites that provide a glimpse of humankind’s past. The sites help us learn about ancient human cultures and civilizations. Examples of such sites in Tanzania include ancient rock paintings of Kondoa Irangi, Olduvai Gorge, Kaole ruins, Ismila Stone Age site, Engaruka ruins, etc.
As part of our wildlife safaris to the Serengeti, you will visit Olduvai Gorge-one of the most famous historical site in Tanzania and the world.
Olduvai Gorge
Olduvai Gorge houses the earliest known evidence of human existence. At this site, paleoanthropologists have discovered hundreds of fossilized bones and tools dating millions of years. The site is located between Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti plains.
Olduvai is a misspelling of the Maasai word Oldupai, which is a local name for the wild sisal plant that grows around the site.
